EPANET
The public-domain standard for water distribution modelling — hydraulics and water quality in pressurised networks.
Open-source water hammer simulation in Python — method-of-characteristics transients on EPANET networks.
Install
pip install tsnetTSNet simulates hydraulic transients in pressurised networks using the method of characteristics, reading standard EPANET INP files and adding transient drivers: pump trips and start-ups, valve closures, bursts and leaks, with surge protection devices (open and closed surge tanks) representable in the network.
It is the most complete open-source option for first-pass surge screening — checking whether a pump-trip envelope threatens a rising main before commissioning a full commercial transient study. As research software its validation envelope is narrower than commercial tools; treat results accordingly.
