EPA SWMM
The public-domain engine of urban drainage: dynamic-wave pipe networks, runoff, LID and water quality.
Storm and foul water drainage design and 1D hydraulic modelling software for UK and Irish civil engineers.
by Causeway Technologies
Causeway Flow is a commercial drainage design and analysis desktop application tailored specifically for UK and Irish civil engineering workflows. It combines pipe network initial sizing using the Modified Rational Method with detailed 1D dynamic hydraulic simulation powered by the EPA SWMM engine. The software models storm and foul water networks, surface water attenuation, storage structures, and Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) such as permeable paving, rain gardens, and geocellular tanks in accordance with CIRIA C753 guidance and local planning authority standards.
Practising civil engineers use Causeway Flow to design adoptable drainage networks, size storage features, perform climate change sensitivity analyses, and generate UK-compliant approval documentation, long-sections, and Level 2 BIM reports. Integrations with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Causeway Live Design enable direct import and export of surfaces and network geometries. However, as commercial software tailored specifically to UK and Ireland regulatory frameworks and FEH rainfall data, it requires paid subscription licensing and is less suitable for international projects governed by non-UK design standards.
